Event Description:
This is your chance to own one of the three remaining "Old South" plantation homes of Chappell Hill, TX. If you love historic charm, then keep reading.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
Built in 1850, the Lockhart Plantation was once a 1000-acre farm ran by 75 slaves in the thriving aristocratic and cultural center of Chappell Hill. The farm had its own blacksmith shop, cotton gin, store and other facilities. The plantation was owned by Dr. John Lockhart and was frequented by Sam Houston himself when he came to Chappell Hill for both business and pleasure.
Today, the home and also the slave quarters have been pristinely maintained and many of its original features and structures remain. It was bought in 1961 and a program of reclamation began on the home and the land. The home was built from hand-cut cedar, pine, ash and black walnut trees from the property. Much of these originals remain in the home today including the original front door and front window panes. Also much of the flooring in the original 5 rooms is original. The Lockhart House was designated a Medallion House by the Texas Historical Commission in 1964.
