Washington County Day at the Capitol Feb. 26

As state legislators and officials convene in Austin for the 86th Legislative Session, the Washington County Chamber will host the biannual Washington County Day at the Capitol on Tuesday, February 26, 2019. The event is sponsored by Blue Bell Creameries, Briannas Salad Dressing, Brenham National Bank, and the Washington County Chamber of Commerce.
Over two dozen elected officials and business/community leaders will be in Austin for the event. When the House convenes at 10:00 a.m., Representative Ben Leman will read a resolution about the history and unique character of Washington County. Five officials will be introduced on the House floor: County Judge John Durrenberger, Brenham Mayor Milton Tate, Burton Mayor David Zajicek, Blinn College District Chancellor Dr. Mary Hensley, and Chamber Chairman of the Board Amanda Stolz.
Senator Lois Kolkhorst will also recognize Washington County officials and citizens from the Senate floor when it convenes at 11:00 a.m. that morning.
In continuing a tradition set in place during Lt. Governor Bob Bullock’s tenure, leaders from Brenham/Washington County will hand-serve Blue Bell ice cream in the Lt. Governors Reception Room to senators, representatives and their staff members, thanks to a generous donation from Blue Bell Creameries. The legislators will also be given gifts of Briannas Gourmet Salad Dressing, generously donated by Del Sol Food Company.
Dr. Eric Alford from Baylor Scott & White-The Brenham Clinic will serve as Physician of the Day at the Capitol again this year. As a service to the Texas Legislature, the Texas Academy of Family Physicians provides a physician in the Capitol for each day of the legislative session and has since 1971. This program is organized by TAFP and supported by the Texas Dept. of State Health Services and the Texas Medical Association. The Physician of the Day is introduced in both the Senate and the House of Representatives and his name becomes a permanent part of the official legislative record. Dr. Alford will see patients throughout the entire day. Dr. Alford is also a member of the Washington County Chamber Board of Directors.
